- “Have you ever dreamed of owning your own business?”
- “Why don’t you start your own business despite the fact that you so desperately want to?”
You will hear any number of the following answers:
- A) A business costs a lot of money to start
- B) I’ll wait until the economy gets better
- C) Initially getting or keeping a job is safer than opening a business
- D) I don’t know how to start a business
All of these are very logical, cerebral, safe answers, but if you could hop in your 1982 Delorean DMC 12 and get up to eighty eight miles an hour which would allow your flux capacitor to generate the 1.21 gigawatts necessary for time travel, and go back 1 minute in time and ask the exact same group, the exact same question with one caveat you would get an entirely different answer. Let me explain.
Imagine the same group being asked the same two questions, but this time, you threw in the caveat that it was impossible to fail as a business owner. They would be profitable, they would build equity for retirement, and they would enjoy the freedom and flexibility that they have always dreamed of…………….what do you think the responses would be then? You guessed it; ten out of ten people would say “Of course I would do it under those circumstances!” Now I am most definitely not suggesting that it is impossible to fail as a business owner. It happens every day. What I am doing is challenge the validity of those logical, cerebral, safe answers.
The 800 Pound Gorilla in The Room that nobody wants to talk about at cocktail parties or at our kids sporting events with other parents is…………. WE ARE AFRAID TO FAIL. We are wired for years to be employees and most of us are scared to death to depart from the norm. Think about it for a moment. Get good grades, go to college, get a good job, good benefits, head down, yes sir, give them 30 good years, you’ll get a cake and a pension. Well, that doesn’t exist anymore. But The 800 Pound Silverback Monster that took its place is alive and well, and nobody taught us how to beat him.
Here’s the good news, you don’t have to beat him, you just have to face him. It is natural to be scared when you think about starting a business. Who wouldn’t be? If I was working with a client that had absolutely no fear, I would know that one of two things was going on. Either they’re not serious about owning a business or they’re crazy, and in either case I can’t help them.
The people that actually move forward and live the American Dream are not fearless people, they are the people who could manage that nauseous feeling in the pit of their stomach the night before they signed a purchase agreement…….because the alternative is a precarious one at best. Seek good council, do the appropriate diligence, manage your fear, and do what most people only dream of…….kick that 800 lb Gorilla’s rear end!
Don’t let the Gorilla in the room scare you, get the facts about starting a business today.
