I was approached by a fellow who wants my help researching a particular franchise. As we talked I could see he had absolutely fallen in love with the business to the point where he just didn’t see the facts.
It reminds me of the old song “Smoke Gets in Your Eyes.” In spite of the fact that a large percentage of the franchisees had closed and the others are making little or no money, he believed he will be wildly successful.
All who love are blind. Doing successful franchise research requires the ability to remain objective and open to the facts. Carefully interviewing existing franchise owners will help you avoid…… Tears I cannot hide.
In reality this phenomenon works both ways. Sometimes folks reject a franchise without checking it out. Some of the best relationships are not love at first sight, but when we really come to know and understand the other party we find we really are a good match. Get the facts before you make your decision. Keep your emotions in check until you really know. And remember:….. When your heart’s on fire – You must realize – Smoke gets in your eyes.
