David Fischer, a native New Yorker, spent most of his adult life in sales management and training. Today, he is the Founder and President of Chartwell Seventeen Advisory Group Inc., a certified Sandler Training Center located at 733 Third Avenue 15th Floor, New York, NY 10017.
About eight years ago, Fischer decided it was time to take his career with a pharmaceutical company in a different direction by going back to business school. After graduating in 2010, he knew that he wanted to go into business ownership yet he wasn’t quite sure what that looked like.
“I remember sitting and thinking what do I want to do next,” said Fischer. “I could go back and get another job, probably for a similar company. But, I realized that wasn’t the path that I wanted to take.”
Fischer had an opportunity where he was able to leave the pharmaceutical company and explore other options. As part of the severance package, he was given the opportunity to attend several seminars. After an email informing him of a webinar on franchising, Fischer decided to check it out.
“The seminar was really of interest to me, so I signed up for the workshop,” said Fischer. “I’ll never forget, it was in November and I was really impressed with John. I was compelled enough at the end of that session to schedule a meeting with John.”
John Armstrong, FranNet of New York, worked to find a business that would best fit Fischer’s goals. Initially, when Fischer was introduced to Sandler Training he wasn’t convinced. After being in sales for so long, he knew he wanted to be part of something different. Yet, after looking deeper into Sandler Training, he understood why Armstrong had suggested it.
“The detail that really sold me on Sandler was the level of consistency and the feedback I received from all the other franchisees,” said Fischer. “Sandler is a sales training company, but in reality you’re buying a selling business.”
Fischer was really intrigued with the Sandler approach and their belief that owners need to become a product of the product. After interacting with several Sandler colleagues, he saw that everyone was actively participating in the training method.
“There were several ah-ha moments as I got to know the business,” said Fischer. “It felt right and it really impressed me. My takeaway was I love the fact that this business model was set up in a way that you have that credibility.”
Fischer’s advice to others thinking about franchise business ownership is to make sure you have the time. He recommends focusing on the interviews with the franchisee to really understand what the responsibilities are.
“If you are looking into business ownership, commit to the time and find a resource,” said Fischer. “Having someone there each step of the way helped me to make an informed decision.”
