Karl Reebenacker spent most of his life as an electronic engineer working in telecommunications. Around 2002, Reebenacker began working in the oil and gas industry until he was caught in the business downturn and was downsized in 2015. It was then he decided he wanted to take back control over his future. Today he is the proud owner of a Dryer Vent Wizard franchise located in Conroe, TX.
Reebenacker realized that if he tried looking for another job, obstacles would always be there waiting. The possibility of being downsized would linger as long as he was working for someone else, not to mention he saw himself more toward the end of his working career than the beginning. It also started becoming apparent that his age was getting in the way of his job search. That when Cynthia Mora, FranNet of Houston, came into the picture.
“She actually presented me with four choices,” said Reebenacker. “The approach that I took was I was looking less at the work and more at what the franchise would do for my quality of life.”
Mora took Reebenacker through FranNet’s scientifically constructed process that starts with the individual’s Personal Franchise Assessment (PFA). This in-depth behavioral assessment tool focuses on several aspects, some being the behavior profile, risk tolerance, communication style and financial background. These attributes, combined with Mora’s expertise, provided Reebenacker with the best franchise opportunities which eventually led to his current business.
Reebenacker wanted to balance his work and family life and, once the business was fully established, look into placing himself more in a management role so he could use it as income stream to segue into a soft retirement. Reebenacker was ready to take control of his own destiny and find a business that would use his current set of skills.
“I’m a technical person, not necessarily a people person or a marketer,” said Reebenacker. “What I wanted was a business that would tend to sell itself, I’m really selling something that is a need more than a want.”
Dryer Vent Wizard has a very specialized focus and there is not a lot of competition. Most competitors will provide cleaning services but Dryer Vent Wizard goes beyond regular services. They will repair dryer vents, work on booster fans and perform reinstallation’s among many other services. The company is intent on being thorough so customers get more for their dollar.
“I opened October 12th,” said Reebenacker. “The biggest challenge I have now is educating my potential customers and increasing my visibility. Homeowners don’t usually think about their dryers until there’s a malfunction. It’s really an out of sight out of mind thing for the average person. An appliance repair technician is often called first, on the reasonable assumption that the dryer is the problem, and the technician identifies the vent problem.”
When it comes to advice for potential future business owners, Reebenacker encourages individuals not to hold back on getting your brand out there. Try to think out of the mind of a homeowner, get comfortable with spending and budgeting from a business perspective so your business is set up to succeed.
